Life lived

A honey bee seemingly no longer alive on light pink-tan pavement concrete

I sat in a small white Adirondack chair in the courtyard of the building where I work while I ate my lunch. I reflected upon life and the current state of affairs as I ate my leftover torta Cubana from yesterday while various office workers went in and out of the business suites surrounding the interior courtyard. I noticed a little honey bee chillin by my left foot only to quickly realize it was not moving whatsoever. I went to touch it and almost accidentally flipped it over. I initially thought “poor little honey bee” and then remembered seeing a post recently that old honey bees spend their last night alive on flowers watching the sunset sensing that their end is near. Using a fallen leaf, I moved the little honey bee into a nearby bush away from human foot traffic. I changed my mind about it being a “poor little honey bee” and forevermore, whenever I see a honey bee after it has died, will think to myself “Lucky little honey bee. I hope that I too will be able to sense my end and be one with Mother Earth whenever my time is near.”
